The Cup Irish Art
Sitting in The Cup Irish Art. Here is Wee Conor from Magherafelt in Co. Derry wearing a brand new Kerry Jersey and a miraculous medal.
Delighted to receive this commission from Conors’ Mom Ciara.
The Cup Irish Art is a work in progress. Conor was on his holidays in Co. Kerry last year and had his photo taken in the Sam Maguire when it was doing the rounds in south Kerry last August.
Conor was an absolute pleasure to paint with his beautiful blue eyes and crop of golden hair.
In the original photos Conor is pictured with Diarmaid O”Connor and Joe O”Connor from the current Kerry squad.
The only instruction I was given was to make sure the Miraculous Medal was included as faith is very important to Conor and Ciara his mother.
The Method
I started this painting using a Winsor&Newton acrylic pink called process magenta. This vibrant colour gives the finished painting a real pop.
For the background colour I used a Gamblin colour from Evans Art Supplies in Dublin called Portland Cool Grey. The background has to be simple and unassuming to make the subject stand out more.Painting the Sam Maguire is always an interesting because of the reflective nature of silver. This requires a bit of guess work imagination and skill. It also requires artistic licence.
This is the fifth commission of the Sam Maguire featuring children I have received since the Kerry victory last July.
I love painting the cup and above all I love to paint the green and gold of the Kerry jersey.

Wishing the Kerry Team and management much success in the 2023 season
